LITERATURE & CULTURE
Urdu. Poetry. Heritage. Cultural Dialogue.
Alongside his legal practice, Dr Saif Mahmood is an internationally recognised author, literary scholar, commentator and public speaker, widely regarded as one of South Asia’s leading contemporary voices on Urdu literature, poetry and cultural heritage.
His work is devoted to preserving and interpreting Urdu as a literary and civilisational tradition -one that carries centuries of poetry, philosophy, history and cultural memory. Through his writing, lectures and public engagements, he seeks to make Urdu literature accessible to wider audiences while highlighting its continuing relevance in contemporary cultural conversations.
Dr Mahmood is the author of Beloved Delhi: A Mughal City and Her Greatest Poets (Speaking Tiger, New Delhi; first edition 2018, revised edition 2023), an acclaimed work on the literary world of Mughal Delhi and the poets who shaped the Urdu tradition. The book is recognised as an important contribution to the understanding of Urdu’s literary heritage and has been cited in research theses and academic writings.
A scholar and interpreter of Urdu poetry, Dr Mahmood combines literary analysis with the oral and performative traditions of Urdu. Through poetry recitation, translation, commentary and historical interpretation, he brings alive the voices of classical and modern Urdu poets, exploring themes of love, resistance, identity, memory and the human condition. He is a sought-after speaker at literature festivals, universities and cultural institutions across the world, having delivered lectures and participated in conversations on Urdu literature, poetry, language and South Asian cultural heritage. His distinctive approach bridges scholarship and performance, placing poetry within its historical, social and cultural context while introducing it to new generations of readers and audiences.
In the United Kingdom, Dr Mahmood has been actively engaged in preserving and promoting Urdu’s literary heritage. He leads the Urdu Poetry Masterclass at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he introduces students and enthusiasts to the traditions, techniques and cultural contexts of Urdu poetry. He is also the Literary Executor of the estate of Professor Ralph Russell, the eminent Oriental scholar and one of the foremost Western authorities on Urdu literature, continuing the stewardship and dissemination of a significant body of Urdu scholarship.
His literary engagements have included conversations with leading figures from the worlds of literature, cinema and culture, including Zia Mohyeddin, Javed Akhtar, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Arfa Syeda Zehra, TM Krishna and Zehra Nigah.
His academic interests also explore the relationship between law, history and literature, including his research at the University of Oxford examining the relationship between power, resistance and literary expression in the Mughal period.
Dr Mahmood advises cultural organisations in the United Kingdom and India and serves as Vice President of Urdu Culture London and Chair of Trustees of Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu UK.
Through his scholarship, writing and cultural leadership, Dr Mahmood continues to build bridges between Urdu’s historic literary traditions and contemporary global audiences—ensuring that one of the world’s great poetic traditions remains vibrant, accessible and relevant.
